To help your organization provide educational sessions on topics specific to the Partners for Healthy Pets’ engagement efforts, the Partnership has identified a group of experts that are available to speak at various veterinary conference meetings. Improving Client Communication

Jason Coe, DVM, PhD

Dr. Jason Coe is an Associate Professor at the Ontario Veterinary College. After graduating from the College in 2001, he returned from mixed-animal practice to complete a PhD in the area of veterinary communications in 2008. In the same year, Jason joined the Ontario Veterinary College in the Department of Population Medicine where he has established an active research program in the area of veterinary communications including recent projects investigating veterinarian-client communication and adherence, effective veterinary teams, and social media in veterinary medicine. In his current role at the College, he co-coordinates the clinical communication curriculum across all 4 years of the veterinary program and is involved in teaching students about the relationships that exist between people and animals. In 2010, Jason was awarded the Nestlé Purina PetCare Canada Chair in Communications dedicated to improving the relationship between companion-animals and people through research and education. When not dedicating his time to these activities, Jason enjoys personal time with his wife, son and 2 daughters.

Preventive Healthcare Communication

Karyn Gavzer, CVPM, MBA

Karyn is an industry thought leader and practice management consultant, speaker and writer. She specializes in marketing, and training for veterinary practices. Her mission is to help practices "go and grow" with new ideas and practical plans.

She has worked with industry, associations, and veterinary practices for 20 years. She is best known as the former director of marketing for the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) where she created public campaigns with industry, such as "Pets Need Dental Care, Too" and training programs to help veterinarians and their teams market their services more effectively.

Karyn has an MBA and is one of fewer than 400 certified veterinary hospital managers (CVPM) in North America. She is a member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA); an AAHA adjunct faculty member, and one of the founders of VetPartners, the association of veterinary practice management consultants and advisors. You can find many of her articles and video clips on the, AAHA-Trends Today and Veterinary Team Brief websites.


Preventive Healthcare Programs

Jessica Goodman Lee, CVPM

Originally from Boston, Ms. Lee graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College in Minnesota with a BA in studio art in 1989. Ms. Lee became a CVPM in 2009 and has spent over a decade managing practices in Minnesota, North Carolina, and most recently Texas where she was the hospital administrator of a brand new seven-doctor general practice with both alternative medicine and rehabilitation clinics, as well as a large luxury boarding facility. On the side, she provided practice consulting services, contributed articles to multiple industry publications, and has spoken at regional and national conventions. With the recent sale of her practice in December 2010, Ms. Lee has taken a position with Brakke Consulting, Inc.’s Veterinary Practice Management Group.

Feline-Friendly Practices

Ilona Rodan, DVM, DABVP (Feline)

Dr. Rodan is the founder and hospital director of the Cat Care Clinic. She has over 25 years experience in veterinary medicine, and has been practicing exclusively feline medicine since 1987. In 1995, she became one of the first American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Diplomates with a specialty in feline practice. Dr. Rodan has been a strong influence both nationally and internationally in the fight to prevent feline behavior problems in household cats and to enhance the relationship between people and pets. Dr. Rodan is also a past president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP), and has co-chaired a number of guidelines developed by AAFP and joint AAFP and AAHA guidelines, including the AAFP Feline Behavior Guidelines, AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines, AAFP/AAHA Feline Life Stage Guidelines, and the AAFP Feline Handling Guidelines. In 2005, she was awarded the AVMA Animal Welfare Award for her leadership and contributions to advancing feline welfare.

Michael Warren, DVM

Dr. Warren is a practicing veterinarian and online strategist. He writes, speaks and consults internationally on how practices can improve their client communication and engagement through online media. He is a spirited and dynamic speaker – tremendously passionate about the subject matter and driven to share marketing ideas with his fellow veterinarians.

Partners for Healthy Pets 2013 Overview

The Partners for Healthy Pets conversation started in late 2010 among 14 animal health industry leaders and 6 prominent national associations.

Now, just 3 years since that first conversation, the collaboration and momentum of this partnership is unprecedented in our industry and the organization has grown to include the support of more than 100 member and associate member groups within the veterinary profession. Together we are working to

  1. Communicate the value and benefit of preventive healthcare
  2. Enhance relationships with pet owners
  3. And help the profession deliver an even higher quality of preventive healthcare
